Group,

If you have access to a satellite at your school, you may be interested
in the following information. It sounds like a wonderful way to promote
awareness in your community for your library technology program as you also
help citizens to become consumer credit educators.

Putting Consumers in Charge: Credit Education Strategies

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Community educators who work with adults who are
confronted with credit decisions will be able to gain new ideas and the
tools to work with those consumers at a December 1, 1994, national
satellite videoconference. The conference, Putting Consumers in Charge:
Credit Education Strategies, is being presented by the Cooperative
Extension System and the Office of Public Responsibility, American Express
Company.

American consumers are credit consumers. The typical credit card holder
carried an average balance of $2,733 last year and paid nearly $460 in
interest on that debt. This rising level of personal debt, coupled with
the introduction of dozens of new products in the credit marketplace,
makes the need for timely consumer education greater than ever.

The "train the trainers" conference is designed to help participants help
consumers deal with the changing world of consumer credit. Community
educators, lenders, consumer credit counselors, community development
representatives, military family support services representatives,
Employee Assistance professionals and others representing community-based
programs will learn techniques proven successful in reaching and teaching
consumers about credit choices, costs and control. During the two-hour
conference, participants will be able to call in questions and network
with others.

Putting Consumers in Charge: Credit Education Strategies will feature
four nationally-recognized speakers. Terry Savage, a syndicated columnist
for the Chicago Sun-Times and author of Terry Savage's New Money
Strategies for the '90's, will speak on Credit Choices; Gerri Detweiler, a
consultant and author of The Ultimate Credit Handbook, will discuss Credit
Costs; Luther Gatling, director of Budget and Credit Counseling Services,
Inc., in New York City, will talk about Credit Control; and David McNally,
president of Trans-Form Company, a consulting group that helps individuals
and organizations maximize the creative potential of their human
resources, will offer insights into becoming involved in local credit
education programs.

In addition, the videoconference will highlight several model programs
and will feature a wide range of resource materials and creative
approaches to reach consumers at the "teachable moment," using methods
that take advantage of today's technologies and acknowledge busy
lifestyles.

The planning team includes Meredith Layer, Janet Garkey and Patricia
Edwards of the Office of Public Responsibility, American Express Company;
Jane Schuchardt of the Extension Service - USDA; and representatives from
the Extension System: Cynthia Needles Fletcher, Jayne Hager Dee, Tom
Freelove and Roger Brown of Iowa State University; Jeanne M. Hogarth and
Jane Baker Segelken of Cornell University; Judy McKenna of Colorado State
University; Linda Kirk Fox of University of Idaho; Janice Holm Lloyd of
North Carolina State University; Nancy Porter of Clemson University; and
Nancy Granovsky of The Texas A&M University System.

The conference, Putting Consumers in Charge: Credit Education Strategies,
is scheduled for December 1, 1994, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Central Time.
There is no downlink fee, but pre-registration is required. Site
coordinators are currently being sought by the conference planning team.
The deadline for registration as a site coordinator is September 15,1994.
