The "State of the State" message which Governor Mario Cuomo of New York
State delivered to the Legislature today is avilable to Internet users
through the New York State Library gopher.  This is the first time that
a "State of the State" message has been made so widely and immediately available
 .

The Govenror states that New York muyst be "at the forefront of
technology development" and the uses of technology. The State Library is
using the Internet to provide greater public access to government
information, offering access to selected State government information.
State Library Director Jerome Yavarkovsky said that "this use of modern
telecommunications technology enables researachers, students and
citizens to get immeidate access to information produced by their government."

Information accessible through the gopher includes services of the State
Library, online cataogs of the State lIbrary and other institutions, New
York State agency descriptions, and full texts of selected publications of the
State Library and other NY State government agenceies.  There are also
pointers to other Internet resources, including Federal government
information, Free-nets, and bulletin board ssystems.  "We anticiapte
steady growth as more State agencies make thier infomration availbnale on
the Internet" says Yavarkovsky.
