Jane Merryman accurately points out that she cannot telnet directly to many of the gophers that interest her the most. Some gophers actually do allow such public access. It's often worth trying this: telnet> nysernet.org 70 login: gopher The "70" suffix is the direct address of many (but not all) gophers. A much surer (almost certain) way to access the information is to use the gopher on your host computer (if there is one). If not, telnet to one of these public access gophers: Q3: Where are there publicly available logins for Gopher? A3: Here is a short list, use the site closest to you to minimize network lag. Public Logins: Hostname IP# Login Area ------------------------- --------------- ------ ------------- consultant.micro.umn.edu 134.84.132.4 gopher North America ux1.cso.uiuc.edu 128.174.5.59 gopher North America panda.uiowa.edu 128.255.40.201 panda North America gopher.msu.edu 35.8.2.61 gopher North America gopher.ebone.net 192.36.125.2 gopher Europe Once logged on, the easiest way to find the desired information is to conduct a VERONICA search for the keword(s) that interest(s) you. Gopher is remarkably easy to use, and the on-line help is excellent. You can email the results of your search directly to your email account; most users can download the data directly to their home computers, and VERONICA and JUGHEAD searches yield a wealth of information. - Mel ____________________________________________________________________________ Mel Roseman Internet: mrosema@ctp.org
