Virginia: We do not allow games on any of our workstations....we don't
have enough stations for research and as far as I am concerned games are
for home use. The multimedia CD's on the workstation described on the
attached message are about as close as our students are going to get to
a game. I even deleted solitaire from Windows, someone found it one day
and the word spread fast.

Subject: CD ROM INFO.

Thanks for your interest. I would like to compare notes.
We run a Novell LAN with six workstations and have a 5 CD Drive Tower.
I am in desperate need of more workstations, and hope for at least two
more next year.

Right now on the network we run these CD's: Grolier's Multimedia (without
the video and sound capabilities because the network cannot support
multimedia), Readers Guide to Periodical Literature on disc, Reference
Bookshelf from Microsoft, SIRS Index, and Discovering Authors. Our automated
catalog (Mandarin) and a few other programs are installed on the file server
and run through the network.

Because of all the fantastic Multimedia CD's out there, I have set up a
stand alone Multimedia Workstation so that students can work with the
multimedia aspects of the CD's.

Installed on this workstation is a second copy of Grolier's Multimedia
Encyclopedia with sound and video capabilities (39.95 from DAK, can you
believe it!), CNN Newsroom CD, Time Multimedia Almanac and Reference
Bookshelf Multimedia along with several student authored multimedia folders.
I have the Encarta on order. This is from Microsoft and is apparently quite
an impressive CD encyclopedia. I ordered it from this vendor (CD ROM
Warehouse in N.J. for $89.00, it listed for $300.00 plus, but you know how
that goes.)

My goals for this year include trying out SIRS Government Documents on
CD, these are full text. They will give you a three month free trial.
I also really need a full text newspaper on disc. I am considering the
New York Times on disc since it is indexed in Readers Guide. It is very
expensive so its a hard decision. Newsbank is also putting out a CD of
full text news which isn't as expensive. Do any of you know anything
about these full text newspaper CD's?

I am the school media specialist in a 9-12 high school of 1400 students,
we have been automated for five years. For some reason this high school
never got into microfiche, so I am looking towards full text CD's. We
do use the Classmate Program to do online searching.

I'll send out the names of two excellent sources of CD's with great
prices tomorrow. I have them at school. Please let me know if I can
offer any additional info. I would love to hear what you are doing at your
schools.
