REQUEST FOR HELP IN SURVEY ATTITUDES TOWARD LISTSERVS
     -----------------------------------------------------
As a qualitative researcher, I have become interested in the use of
the free-flowing responses on the ListServs I subscribe to as a
possible source of data. My colleague, Diane Kester, and I are
beginning to explore the feelings of people as the begin and
continue to use electronic media to communicate. We would be
grateful to any of you who are willing to respond, in as much
detail as possible, to the following questions.

Please send your responses directly to me (lsmellon@ecuvm.cis.
ecu.edu) and feel free to forward this questionnaire to other
appropriate lists. We will be glad to send participants a
report of our study results.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

What type of organization do you work for?
What is your position there?
Do you work in a rural, suburban, urban setting?
Is your access to ListServs free to you? (eg. through a
  university, paid by employer, etc.)
If you use a dial-up service, is it a local or a long-
  distance call?
Do you read your mail at work or home? How often? How
  many minutes/hours per day?

2. We have identified three categories of ListServ subscribers:
those who ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in discussions, those who
SOMETIMES PARTICIPATE, and those who RARELY PARTICIPATE (or
"lurk"). Which category best describes your participation?
Why do you choose to participate in the way that you do? What
turns lurkers into occasional, or active, participants? Were
active participants always active? (WE REALLY WANT TO HEAR
FROM LURKERS, AS WELL AS PARTICIPANTS, ON THIS QUESTION!!!)

3. How many ListServs do you subscribe to? Do you like some
better than others? Why? Do you participate in some more than
in others? Why? Have you unsubscribed to some? Why? After
how long? Discuss how you feel about your favorite ListServs.

4. When did you first start using ListServs? Please describe
as much as you can remember about your feelings as you began
using ListServs.

5. Please describe any "electronic friendships" that you have
developed through your ListServs. Do you communicate privately?
How often? Is the communication limited to professional issues
or has it become a personal exchange? Please explain.

6. WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO DISCUSS YOUR RESPONSES FURTHER WITH
ME VIA E-MAIL?

       --------------------------------------
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP WITH OUR STUDY!!!
