        How about a book like 'The Wave'?  I think it was written by Todd
Strasser.  It has been around quite a while and is in paperback.  It shows how
easy it is for usually reasonable people to get carried away.  It all takes
place at a high school.  At one time you could get a teaching Guide to go with
it.  A good YA novel!
