I have an unusual reference questions that relates to a minor controversy in many schools. As you know baseball type caps are all the rage with kids, and many students prefer to wear them all day long. A number of teachers, and especially administrators are not comfortable with this practice. Some schools have banned hats altogether. My wife, who teaches 4th grade, prefers to let her students wear their hats in class. It does not offend her sensibilities at all. She believes that there must be some archaic story behind the notion that wearing hats indoors is a sign of disrespect. She would like to bolster her case with the "true story" about why polite people are supposed to take off their hats indoors. Is there a reference librarian who can uncover the origin of the hats off custom? Henry Gordon Library Media Teacher Samuel Jackman Middle School Sacramento, CA hgordon@ctp.org
