Sorry for the delay, but I had to wait until I got to the zoo to check out
my facts.  A Canadian serviceman in the first world war took a bear cup
from Northern Ontario with him to England.  It was called Winnie after his
home town, Winnipeg.  As the bear became to large to keep as a pet, it was
donated to the London Zoo.  It became quite famous and was, according to
my source, the inspiration for the name of winnie the pooh.
