LM-Netters, Last week I posted a message to the group about CD-ROM programs compatible with Winnebago Circ/Cat. Here are some of the responses I received. ========================================================================= From: sharon Murray <MURRAYS@DOVER.k12.ar.us> Subject: Re: Retrospective Conversion Programs I used BRODARTs Percision One about 2 years ago to do this. We (all 3 schools in our district k-12) purchased just the retrospective collection. That made it very cost effective. The hit rate was good. Sorry I didn't keep exact percentages. But I was happy with the product. I hasve Winnabago. ======================================================================== From: s_lochhead@mentor.unh.edu Subject: RE: Retrospective Conversion Programs I had WLN (1-800-dial-wln) do my recon, and they were great. They have a cd product for do-it yourselfers, both mac and dos versions, which is compatible with winnebago. Call 'em up! Has anyone out there used a CD-ROM > product with the Winnebago program that automatically converts records > to MARC format? ... similar to Alliance Plus for Follett catalogs? > We also use Winnebago 5.1 Circ/Cat - we started with (I think 3.2?) about 3 yrs ago. We did our own retro for the entire book collection (8800 vols) in about 6 weeks using Gaylord's SuperCat. It is similar to Alliance Plus in that it is a series of 5 CDs full of MARC records. I chose SuperCat because the bi-annual school subscription price was less than it's competitors (Bibliofile, etc.) while the number of MARC records available was comparable. I seem to remember something like a 93% hit rate on a relatively _old_ book collection. AV is a whole other story. It has some (mostly video) but the vast majority of my AV collection is still MARC-less. Conversion is not "automatic" but is easily accomplished. There are a couple of tricks but by talking to Winnebago & Gaylord we got it worked out fairly quickly and is now working seamlessly. SuperCat allows you to search by LCCN, ISBN, Title, or Author. Another possibility is to send your "short records" to a service company like Marcive or Amigos for conversion to full MARC. Advantages to this method: 1. TIME - you don't have to spend yours doing it. 2. ACCURACY - that's one of the things they get paid for 3. UNIFORMITY - once you decide what field tags to use for local info and a couple of other choices you need to make - every record will be treated the same way Since you already have short records, I think I'd recommend this method over doing it yourself. If you have specific questions, just ask. If you'd like to phone that's ok too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Melissa Davis Librarian Splendora Middle School Splendora I.S.D. It has been amazing in doing the retro (on one disc) and the new comes out quarterly or monthly, depending on what you want to pay. We found that the quarterly kept up with our needs for the new ones. If you put in a brief record, the POne record can be added to overide in Winnie. Last year I started putting in title records as I ordered -- really helped when watching for dups. BTW, have you loaded the upgrade from June? Are you noticing problems in the automatic number assignments. If so, write to <conlon_j@hcca.ohio.gov> She is collecting stats on this problem, which is pretty bad if you are not aware ... Her name is Julie. One more comment, almost anyone can be trained to download from POne and load into the system (ie., a volunteer). It is only in checking the cataloging before running barcodes that we often get bogged down -- we changed to LC headings and have to get rid of the juvie lit sub-head and things like FIC being in as 813, 823, or 92 instead of the B which we use. Also, the 300 tag is often not entered since the book was cataloged in draft form. For items you can't find, Mitinet is a good program for "fill in the blanks for a person who does not know the tags". Of course Winnebago's record for entry is nice too. Good Luck. PH:(Bro Dart) 800-233-8467/ext 640) You have my permission to post this to LM_NET if you think your query may become a target. Have a great day! <haase_m@hcca.ohio.gov>
