Hilary brought up an interesting point. I think all of us would like to be automated, if we aren't already, and many of us use InfoTrac or other computer indexes, many of which include many articles full-text. I wondered for a while why I should bother to teach the use of the Reader's Guide, when we weren't using it, and InfoTrac was so easy! However, an experience I had last week made me think twice. I took my daughter and her friend to the public library to do some research. The previous two times they had used InfoTrac, as well as some other sources. This time, however, a sign on the computer held the dreaded sign, "Out of Order". At first we panicked, and thought of driving several miles to another branch, until we noticed that they still carried the good old Readers' Guide. We sat down to search, when I soon realized that the girls had no idea what the numbers meant in the Readers' Guide (volume, pages, etc.). So I attempted to educated them (briefly). It so happened that I began a unit this week on "using magazines as a reference tool" to my sixth graders. I'm now planning on including a section, "how to decipher the Readers'Guide", just in case.......
