How about Charlotte's Web? E. B. White provides readers with a very touching an
d insightful story about the life cycle. Good luck with the class.

A very nice book about the death of a grandparent is "Grandpa's slide show" by
Deborah Gould (Lothrop, '87), also "I Had a Friend Named Peter" by Janice Cohn
(Morrow, '87); for nonfiction try Norma Simon's "The Saddest Time" (Whitman '86
 ).

Have you tried _Alex the Life of a Child_? This is a book written by a parent o
f a child who died with Cystic Fibrosis. I'm sorry, but I can't find it amongs
t my books, so I can't give you an authors name. Perhaps someone else knows the
  title? This boo
k has also been made into a movie, but don't watch without a box of Kleenex!

Hi! Here are more titles with stories dealing with death that I have come in co
 ntact with:

Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume (girl's father dies in a convenience store robbery)

The Bird's Christmas Carol by Wiggins (a story written long ago about an ill chi
ld--death is not in many books written in this time period of 1941)

Nobody's Fault by Hermes (a riding lawnmower accident kills a girl's brother)

A Summer to Die by Lois Lowry ( a sister's death)

There is also one by Marion Dane Bauer, but I can't recall the title. It's abou
t 2 boys who live in the Starved Rock State Park area; they stop to swim in a d
angerous river and one boy drowns. An excellent story that was popular with
elementary/middle school age readers when it first came out in the late '80's.
