Here are more titles with stories dealing with death that I have come in co ntact with: Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume (girl's father dies in a convenience store robbery) The Bird's Christmas Carol by Wiggins (a story written long ago about an ill chi ld--death is not in many books written in this time period of 1941) Nobody's Fault by Hermes (a riding lawnmower accident kills a girl's brother) A Summer to Die by Lois Lowry ( a sister's death) There is also one by Marion Dane Bauer, but I can't recall the title. It's abou t 2 boys who live in the Starved Rock State Park area; they stop to swim in a d angerous river and one boy drowns. An excellent story that was popular with elementary/middle school age readers when it first came out in the late '80's. ------------------------------------------------------------ From: Natalie Theresa Neu <nneu@trumpet.aix.calpoly.edu> Subject: Books about death for children Our group has now finished the project, and here is our list. _There is a Rainbow Behind Every Cloud_ _Beyond the Ridge_ _The Accident_ _Jim's Dog Muffins_ _When A Pet Dies_ _Across the Meadow_ _The Tenth Good Thing About Barney_ _Growing Time_ _The Fall of Freddie the Leaf_ _Nana upstairs and Nana downstairs_ _The Happy Funeral_ _My Grandpa Died Today_ _Saying goodbye to Grandma_ _Saying Goodbye to Daddy_ _A Look at Death_ _When People Die_ _Learning to say Goodbye_ Some of these books are pretty straightforward and direct, others are really bea utiful -- some are too "sweet."
