Fictional...well sort of, Al Capp in comic strip Li'l Abner..Capp
invented Sadie Hawkins Day in late 30s ..sn annual day in which single
women of Dogpatch pursued the men and if a man was caught by the end of
the day the lucky couple would then appear before Marryin Sam..Daisy Mae
was always trying to catch Abner..even when it wasn't Sadie Hawkins
Day..when in high school there was always a Sadie Hawkins Day and
dance..girls asked the boys..everyone got to dress like hillbillies.  see
The encyclopedia of American comics or any other good reference
coveringAmerican comic strips  Abner strip ended in 1977 i was a devoted
reader ca 1950--1970
