Thanks to all of you who shared your experiences. Of the twenty-four responses, fourteen respondents preferred the perimeter arrangement of computers in a lab situation. The reasons were quick access to any student and ability to see all the screens from a central spot. Some labs had rows of computers back to back in the center of the room. Those who had pod arrangements didn't like them. The feeling was that hackers always sat on the side out of view. Also, it was harder to get around and see who needed help. A few good tips: Be sure the architect knows how deep to make the computer tables. Have elementary students turn their chairs toward the center of the room before they leave so the next group is facing away from computers to hear directions. Avoid center posts for wiring. Buy swivel chairs.
