I think also that it's a "peer influence" thing to read the Goosebumps series. Some kid who doesn't normally pick up anything but a drawing book will see his friend "Joe" (who is a "cool dude" just like himself) totally engrossed in one of these books, so he will want to check one out just to see what they're like. That's usually all it takes for them to get hooked.
