First of all, thanks for everyone who responded and I welcome further comments/suggestions too. I posted a question re: how to plan w/teachers ' "in a jiffy"; how to convince them; how to deal with negative questions; how to deal w/ the question "how will my class get enough service?". Also, asked about Big 6. Some commented that Big 6 REQUIRED a lot of planning, but was well worth it (article about Big 6 was in SLJ a few months ago...good for planning). One form was sent to me that included: teacher name__ Lesson__ Dates __ # of students__ Describe lesson/materials you're requesting__ "Place in LMC box at least 1 week in advance (from D. Collier/Orange Grove Ele/Houston, TX) ONe commented informal planning works best for him. Some said post sign-up sheet for easy access; others said keep on desk to encourage/expect ` co-planning and give the image of professionalism and the message of librarians are teachers whose space is a classroom too. A few said don't allow teachers to sign-up without first seeing you (allows for planning/scope of assignment/resource availability/etc). Some hand notes about units=planning. K-1 or 2/3 weekly scheduled times. (or) one week scheduled checkout/next wk. sign-up projects Plan during grade level mtgs. was another suggestion. One school mandated 90 min. of library time per grading period (gr.1-3) and 120 min. for gr4-5 (in addition to 20 min. reg. checkout time). Another suggestion: post sign-up so everyone can see how busy you are. Special thanks to Bettie Fisher (MI) for faxing her planning form. It includes Teacher name/Class/Gr./Class Size/Unit of Study/ Library Date/**Classroom Teacher's Responsibility/ Librarian's Responsibility/Research Material Needs/ Student abilities, interests, special needs/Eval. of student learning. A form I devised includes my name on top/school name/ w/ the title "LMC Research/Literature Appreciation/ Special Project Unit Planning w/Teachers"...I wanted to include more than Research so all grade levels could participate. Other items I included besides some of the ones listed above include: number of sessions/pre-planning activities done w/teacher(a description)/goal/subjt. area objectives/library media objectives/and an area for notes of changes or improvements in the unit After presenting to my staff for a proposed change in schedule, I didn't hear any negative comments; most felt their children could benefit by "point of need" learning. I hope all works out well. Should I get any other interesting/different responses I'll post again. Thank you, Rita mckillip@omnifest.uwm.edu Rita J.
