Dear NETTERS,

Several days ago I asked for information about how to find out what Web sites
link back to a particular site. Most of the responses were similar, and,
after experimenting, here are my successes:

Go to Altavista. In the search box type - link: <the url in question>

I tried it using Classroom Connect's URL and got back a list of about 3000
sites which link back to Classroom Connect.

Lycos and Webcrawler were also helpful simply by typing the URL in the search
box. (No need to tell them what to do.) AltaVista returned the greatest
number of hits.

This could be one way of evaluating the authority of a Web site. If the
pages linking to it are honorable, most likely it is, too. (Please don't get
the idea that I was questioning Classroom Connect! I already know they are a
great organization! Theirs was simply the URL I picked out of the blue.)

I've had a lot of fun experimenting with various search strategies. Did you
know that half of AltaVista's 4000 references to "potato chips" also mention
cats? And that there are 37 sites that mention "potato chips" and dinosaurs?
 Something to think about.

Have a happy
