DR. DAVID LOERTSCHER FEATURED AT 4TH ANNUAL LIBRARY RETREAT

Dr. David Loertscher, San Jose State University, led district library media
teachers in lively discussions about literacy and information literacy
during the 4th annual LMC 2000 Retreat. He defined avid, capable readers
as basic literacy, stressing the three keys to student success in reading:
something to read (one new library book per student per year for
recreational reading), print rich environment in every room of the school
and every student reading at least 2 million words a year! According to
Dr. Loertscher, every teacher can support literacy everyday: post a list
favorite books you are reading, read aloud to every class every day, give
extra credit for free voluntary reading related to class topic and recycle
magazines from home.

The retreat on June 19 & 20 at Fort Mason is the last activity sponsored by
the SF Ed Fund's three year LMC 2000 Project. District library media
teachers are committed to continue the collegial support, staff
development, resource sharing and networking that this project initiated.

Library media teachers met to plan programs and staff development for the
1997-98 school year. Committees began work on several key actions: Library
Media Standards will be researched and first draft written. Monthly staff
development meetings will be held at various school libraries. A
districtwide information literacy conference is planned for early 1998.
Additional publications include a variety of booklists, PreK-12.
