After recieving and reviewing many responses, here's the short version: 1. The book and movie have little in common save the title, the book dealing with responsibility and peer pressure while the movie is another slasher vehicle. 2. The "R" rating is justified due to graphic violence and gore. 3. If you're a fan of slasher films, it's not as good as "Scream." Last Wednesday, I believe, another LM_NET'er posted an interview with Lois Duncan in which she articulates her upset and views about the movie. I showed a printout of the interview to a few teens, and they empathized with Ms. Duncan to the point of reconsidering their desire to see the movie, NOT because of the content. Thank you to all who responded.
