Thanks to all who offered suggestions for world historical fiction. I have
many great suggestions. Now, if only I had more of the books in my
collection. :-)

Do teachers in other subject areas sing the praises of their listservs like
I do? LM_NETters are the greatest!

Linda, I have a set of Historical fiction from YALSA
Probably you'll get better and maybe repeats, but here goes:
        Mitchell, Gone with the wind
Collier, my brother sam is dead
        Avi, the fighting ground
        Myers, Fallen angels
        Rinaldi, The last silk dress
        O'Dell, Streams to the river
        Taylor, the road to Memphis
        Speare, Sign of the Beaver
        Yep, Dragonwings
        Renault, The king must die
        Westall, The machine gunners
        Hudson, Sweetgrass
        McMurtry, Lonesome Dove
        Paterson, Lyddie
        Harrison, Mother Earth, Father Sky
        Clapp, Witches Children
        Holman, The wild children
        Davis, Silver pigs
Watkins, So far from the bamboo grove
        Lowry, Number the stars.

I read everyone. I felt the books were a cross section of experiences,
time, place. I had a map of the world and located each. I had a
timeline and tried to situate the story there also.

You may notice some are quite mature while others a fourth grader
could easily read. I read Lonesome Dove in the blizzard of 93 when we
were closed for days.

        Good luck!

Hi,
I love Frances Temple's _The Ramsay Scallop_ set just after the Crusades.
Tells the story of a young man just returned from the Crusades and the
young girl he has been betrothed to since birth. They know little about
each other, he is questioning his role in life, she has her doubts, the
parish priest sends them on a pilgrimage, with the proviso that they remain
chaste. As they travel, you get an excellent view of the time, the
building of cathedrals, etc. It is firmly rooted in the time period but is
a wonderful story of two people learning to get to know each other.
Hope this helps,

Very quickly, the two by Karen Cushman, though easy to read for high
schoolers, are quite interesting for a look at the medieval period: Catherine,
Called Birdy and The Midwife's Apprentice.

There is a lot of historical fiction around WWII like Number the Stars,
Fredreich (misspelled), Jacobs Rescue, A message from Anya. Anya is a
dog. Takes place in the pyrenees and is about rescue of Jews. I wish I
had my list at home but there is also When Hitler stole the pink rabbit.
Let me know if you need more. OK?

Sorry this is so sketchy.

I do not know if you will be able to buy these in US but a terrific series
- boys like them.
'
Pagan's Crusade' is set in 12th century Jerusalem during the Crusades.
Pagan is a squire to a templar knight and is very irreverent.
Pagan in Exile is set in France where he goes with the Knight
Pagan's Vows is when he and the knight enter a monastery and the final
Pagan's scribe is years later when Pagan is an Archdeacon in Carcassonne.
Pagan's Vows was Children's book of the year in 1996 and all the others
have been short-listed
They are based a round historic events of the time but are humorous and
adventurous.

They are written by Catherine Jinks and the first was published by Oxford
University Press
ISBN 0 19 553485 9
The others are by Omnibus books part of the Scholastic Australia group
ISBN 1 86291 216 5
1 86291 275 0
1 86291 279 3

Dear Linda,
The former world history teacher in my school insisted that each
student read a novel set before 1500 each quarter of the school year!
The first few years after he began this assignment, I was really
scrambling to find enough materials at a variety of reading levels so
that each student could have a quality reading experience.
I would recommend anything by Rosemary Sutcliffe who writes
primarily about events in the British Isles. A much loved book was
Faraway Lurs by Behn, a love story set in the Bronze Age. A more recent
series by Brennan is about Ice Age culture and features a heroine named
Shiva. For exceptionally capable readers I recommend the Bridal Wreath
by Sigrid Undset, and Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. Several titles just
recently published are excellent reads, Catherine Called Birdy and
Midwife's Apprentice, and The Ramsay Scallop.
Initially, students griped loudly about this "unfair" assignment,
but several of the complainers developed a genuine taste for historical
fiction. In fact, just recently, a high school sophomore came back to
visit me, and to check out the historical fiction collection. She
checked out Faraway Lurs to reread because it's become one of her
favorite books.
If you really need a lengthier bibliography, let me know and I'll
unearth my list at school.

Linda,
I have a list of world historical fiction in my library, but it
is too long to Fax or type into a computer. Send me your snail mail
address and I'll send you one.
(This list became World Historical Fiction for Young Adults,
Highsmith, 1995. It's divided by time period, country, etc. and has
three indexes.)
