I am a librarian with two elementary schools. In the spring of 1998 we will begin the slow process of automating the libraries. I have already begun the weeding process. Now, I am looking at my shelf lists. My collections in both buildings run around 7,000-7,500 books. I have about 500 paperbacks in one library which have pockets and cards but not cataloged. What condition does the shelf list have to be in? The technology coordinator for the district said most likely we will pay a company to input our data. Seven libraries will be doing this at the same time. Some of the shelf list cards are hand written with nothing but the call number , accession number, title and author. What should I do now to ready my shelf list for this. What information should each shelf list card have on it? Also, what should I do with these paperbacks? Many of them are used for the AR program. How will I check them out once automation is completed? I would greatly appreciate answers from the veterans who have been through this.
