NEVER discard your shelf list and KEEP IT UP TO DATE! Why, you may ask. Case in point, one of the librarian's in our district was working on her automated system when lightening struck. Many records were lost, not all, just arbitrary material records from here and there. Since her shelf list had been discarded, these materials had to be found on the shelf (print out a list of say the 900s and then go to the shelf and pull the books not on the list) and then re-cataloged. A word to the wise should be sufficient. mailbox:/g|/Program Files/Netscape/Users/marions/mail/Inbox?id=199806260609.XAA23828@mx3.home.com&number=257236&part=1.2 -- Marion the Librarian Montgomery Academy (6-8) San Diego City Schools marions@home.com --------------CF50BFF5F98E58D1A9988034 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Date: Thu, 25 Jun 1998 20:05:08 EDT From: Jan McGee <JMcgee8038@AOL.COM> Subject: Re: Shelf list cards MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I automated with Winnebago 4 years ago. I did not throw out my shelflist immediately, thank goodness. After my retrospective conversion was complete, I had occasions to check prices for lost books. I found that the majority of my books did NOT have the prices. Many of the books that did have prices had the wrong price. It appeared to be the paperback price instead of the hardbound price. If the MARC record did not give a price, they did not put a price--even though all of the shelflist cards had prices. Since then, I've been systematically going through my cards (entering the book by title because, of course, there is no cross reference for the barcode numbers) and entering the prices by hand. As I have entered the prices, I've also noticed that I did not have nearly as many subject headings--especially in my easy books. My teachers count on multiple subject headings to access the easy books--especially in kindergarten and first grade. (Many of the books had NO subject headings at all.) So, I've been adding those subject headings, too, when I feel they are needed. I'm gradually discarding the shelflist cards as I get everything entered.
