OK folks, here's a good one. We have a student who wrote in his paper that the original author of Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" was Empedocles, and we're trying to verify that he found this information somewhere. Here's an excerpt from the paper: "When Plato discovered this parable dust covered amongst the archives of Greek literature, he saw, not a trivial story, but a masterpiece of philosophical ingenuity. He saw a simple illustration of a complicated concept. He called it his THEORY OF FORMS..." We have a bibliography that lists 4 sources, none of which I can get my hands on right now: Plato. _The Republic_. London: Penguin Books, 1983. Plato. _Plato's theory of knowledge_. New York: Liberal Arts Press, 1951. Grene, David. _Greek political theory_. Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press, 1965. Microsoft Encarta '96, 1996. S.v. "Plato," by Bairds, Robert. If there are any philosophists(ers??) out there who would like to help me get to the bottom of this one, I'd be quite grateful for your input! TIA.
