Need European Vacation hints

I'm traveling to Europe for the first time this summer and need advice.

My husband and two sons will be accompanying me.
Specifically, any hints on good places to stay, how to get around cheaply
(we'd like to do a bunch of countries in about 10 days by train), good
places to eat, etc.

We'll fly into London and like to hit Paris and Naples at the minimum.  (my
husband is a geologist and wants to see Vesuvius).....

We won't be able to take advantage of any package deals, because on part of
the trip I will be attending a conference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Reply to me personally via email.
