Again, thanks to all who helped! Grade 2: Books by Uri Shelevits Folk tales STORY OF JUMPING MOUSE Folk tale series see Charles Mickelacheck, Tomie DePaola When studying globes, use HOW TO DIG A HOLE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD by McNulty DO NOT OPEN by Turkle shows the power of the ocean (useful during hurrican season) Maii and Cousin Horned Toad by Begay (desert Indian legend) Also read with above book...books by Goble especially those about Iktomi and another book THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES I like to expose 2nd gr. to religious legends at Christmas and Hanukkah. ....I put up two posters "Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends" "Merry Christmas to our Christian friends" I tell the story of the three kings and then read THE LEGEND OF OLD BEFANA by De Paola. For Hanukkah I tell the story of the miracle of the oil, then read an amusing modern story, THE CHANUKAH GUEST by Kimmel, and then I teach the kids to play dreidel on a tray using a plastic dreidel and paper clips for "gelt." I then leave the game up all winter for kids to play. The tray has a card that shows what each side of the dreidel means. THE KING'S EQUAL by ? Grades 2 & 3 OR NO GRADE SPECIFIED: Core Knowledge has meaty history curriculum for primary found at www.coreknowledge.org Both levels enjoy biographies ALL ABOUT SAM by Lowry Must go for now. Will send Part 3 when time allows. Micki Grade 3: Cinderella Variations Fairy Tales/Folk tales especially Anansi the Spider stories Show a video of A Story, A Story, read Hold Courlander's "Hat Shaking Dance" from the book of same name, then have students draw a picture from the story on an index card, put the pictures in sequential order, then staple them on a ribbon to make "stories on a string"; read Gerald McDermott's Anansi the Spider and have the kids make construction paper spiders similar to the illustrations in the book. Lots of other stories similar to Anansi from other parts of the world (Brer Rabbit & the Tar Baby) & lots of other spider stories from other cultures (particularly Native American) that can be tied in with Anansi stories.
