My school district has recently been in the press for this same thing. Many schools have eliminated their librarians due to budget cuts, as librarians are not mandated by the state in schools with less than 1000 students. Some are closed, and some are staffed by someone within the building willing to do it part-time. I saw one school of over 900 with a one-day Clerk. My first thought was, what possibly can that clerk do as service to that size population in one day? Especially in light of Colorado's study proving that well-staffed and supported libraries improve test scores, well...wonder why Johnny can't read? It really is sad when cash-poor districts force cuts that really undermine any attempts at a good education for the students.
