One topic that I always thought should've been covered in college media classes is ordering from a variety of vendors (books and supplies). A librarian spends a lot of money, and knowing some of the ins and outs (free order typing service, or ordering off CDs, etc., jobbers vs. vendors, soliciting bids, etc., library binding vs. trade binding, guarantees, etc.) I think would help. I know I was astounded at the amount of money I was responsible for, and yet in media classes I wasn't given a hint about the process of ordering and how compare different catalogs of major vendors. This I learned on my own, and in some cases, am still learning, 13 years later. This sounds like a good topic for prospective media students, and for you to teach. Good luck. Book repair is a very good thing to introduce them to! Another thing I didn't get a realistic picture of in library school was public school budgeting. My predecessor was only here for a year and, in part, it's because she didn't understand schools. She asked for $35,000 of a $100,000 total building budget. <sigh> Not very realistic. Student discipline in the LMC would also be something to discuss. How to repair books was not covered for me, nor any of the practical things that need doing in the library. Best ways to shelve and show paperback books--all kinds, from easy paperbacks to chapter books to oversized nonfiction. No one has ever given me an idea on how to deal with the dust problems, and no one taught me in library school all the computer maintenance tricks and tips I have picked up. How to be the teachers' best friend--these tips always help! Anyway, could you send me your list or post a hit? I would then have an idea of what I might still be missing Put everything in writing and keep a copy Nancy Westendorf, Librarian Community School 14 Rochester, NY 14605 NSpringWes@aol.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
