Mary Magdalene and is very good. She's good at this, but that's the only title I can think of that deals with a Bible character. Hi Kate! Look into Donna Jo Napoli's Magdalene. It gives a "history" for Mary Magdalene and is very good. She's good at this, but that's the only title I can think of that deals with a Bible character. HIT: Christian/Jewish K-8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Original request - responses follow: I'm looking for stories that can be used to remind students of a Biblical story - Old (Hebrew) or New (Christian) Testament. For example: The Phantom Menace (new Star Wars BOOK not the movie) in Chapter 6 tells how Anakin Skywalker helped an alien - Good Samaritan story. My third grade teacher was thrilled with it since she was doing the Good Samaritan. Her students "got it" when she read that part of the chapter to them Dot and Zinnia by Ernst - where two hens fight over an egg - the King Solomon story of the two women fighting over the baby. Anyway - I hope you see where I'm going. I don't want a published Bible story, I'm looking for a secular story that can be compared to a Bible story. ---------------------------- A local librarian has compiled a list of books appropriate for a values education that (I believe) is in the process of being published. Look for: Literature as a means of teaching values to children by Hazel Karp and Rita Frischer. The bibliography lists both religious (Judaic) and secular book titles that explore an aspect of values such as honesty, purity of speech, sharing, charity, respect for the elderly, kindness to animals, self-responsibility, protecting the planet, visiting the sick/mourner, tolerance, etc. Hope this helps! --------------------------------- I really enjoy the story, Old Turtle, by Douglas Wood, a fable about living in harmony with God,the earth and its inhabitants... -------------------------------- Are you familiar with _My Grandmother's Stories_ by Adele Geras. There are several stories that work well with the Biblical tie-in you're looking for. One year when I was teaching Sunday School I used this book and I easily found a comparable Bible story. ------------------------------ I think The Giver by Lois Lowry has lots of Christian themes. ------------------ Try Arrow to the Sun, by Gerald McDermott. ------------------------------- Any of the NARNIA books by C.S. Lewis are great to relate to the gospel story. Maybe MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS as a reminder that its one's heart and beliefs that really matter. ------------------------------ Look into Donna Jo Napoli's Magdalene.
