Thanks to all who responded to my querry regarding the "best" MacBeth video to purchase. 1.My English department prefers the BBC Shakespeare Collection version. The BBC did all the plays some years ago. 2.The only one I have ever seen is the 1960 (?) Hallmark version. The rest are laughable. 3.The English teachers in my school have bought or previewed all the Macbeth videos and are convinced there just isn't a good one available.. 4.Not only am I a librarian but I also teach Macbeth and finding a good production has been somewhat difficult. The Orson Wells version may be significant as a film adaptation but students find it difficult. There has been a version with Judith Dench of Shakespeare in Love fame available recently but some bizarre interpretations also makes it questionable. I use the BBC production with Nicole Williamson that was broadcast last year via Channel One. Although that too has some odd interpretations especially at the end. Since I don't show the entire play, the parts I do show give students an adequate visualization of events. 5.Unfortunately, most of the versions of MacBeth aren't true to the play. The one I use isn't very popular with the kids because it's old and in black and white. (I tell them just about anyone can see in color. LOL) This is the version with Orson Welles. It's true to the play and has only a few directorial changes, mostly with the timing of events. 6.My favorite is an 80's version directed by Roman Polanski--can you believe it? I used it for years when I taught English because it follows the play so closely. I don't know if a newer version exists although one was shown last week on the Classroom Channel (Channel One). -- Roz Goodman, Media Specialist Southwest Region Schools PO Box 90 Dillingham, AK 99576 907-842-5287, FAX 842-5428 rgoodman@dlg.swrsd.gcisa.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
