I think the point has been missed! Kids ARE READING Harry Potter! That's where we can find them and tap into a newfound love of reading. Yes, there are many good pieces of children's literature that we can use to teach foreshadowing, plot, etc., but the plain and simple fact remains--the kids want Harry Potter! Most of you are probably too young to remember every "cool" English teacher back in the sixties teaching poetry with Rod McKuen or Simon and Garfunkle lyrics. It's the same thing! And we're fooling ourselves to think that by banning or shunning Harry Potter books, we'll make them go away (as if we would want to). Personally, I can't wait for the next installment! --- Deb Evers, LMS Sunnyside Elem.
