I'm planning ahead to the election and am thinking about sponsoring an election between characters. I'm thinking that grade levels could read book series with the same character in them to get to know them, then vote for their favorite. Cross curricular applications would include; writing ( the kids could write out position papers with what they know about the character), math (graphing results, polls). and of course the social studies study of government. I teach in K-5. I'd like to do two sets of elections, one K-2, one 3-5. I'd like to have a strong girl character run against a strong boy character at each level. For instance, Junie B. Jones for the K-2, Amber Brown for 3-5. The books need to be short enough that a few can be read in the 3 week time frame. My problem is, (believe it or not), what boy characters should I use. Forget Harry P. too long. Maybe Encyclopedia Brown, but I thought I'd ask for your suggestions. Thanks in advance.
