Sorry this is so late but have been extremely busy with end of school and
then trips after school. Hope this will be useful for some of you for next
year.

We teach Proquest, but show them what Reader's Guide looks like (just in
case they move to a school that uses it.) We've gone to all online
searching, but we are a k-12 school and the library serves all the grade
levels, so it is available to the elementary at no extra cost.

Pam, why not get RG online too? Or as a cdrom? The indexing is
the same, the subject headings haven't changed, and it's not that
green book on the table anymore.

I'll admit that I'm a bit prejudiced <grin>, but I feel you could teach both
the print and online and have the students get a better
understanding of searching for information... which is what it's
really about.

I don't teach Reader's Guide any more. I don't even keep it up-to date. I
order the last year's hard copies at a discount. The few kids who do use it,
leave it to last minute and they usually need the articles yesterday when
ILL can take up to a week or more, even with Faxing! I will use ProQuest
direct(free for me) next year, but I understand that it's geared towards
public libraries. I hope to use EBSCO online in a couple years.

As a public librarian, who also has electronic databases for magazine
articles, I still show high school students Readers' Guide. I have found
that the "see also" headings provide them with "hyperlinks" to related
articles that aren't found if keyword searching is done in the electronic
format. The Readers' Guide also helps the students see the
relationships(because of the "see also") between different ideas.

I took the plunge and stopped getting the reader's guide this year. We
now use only Ebsco on-line.I still have the old Reader's Guides around,
but we only use those in an emergency.

I "teach" the EBSCO through Health - the kids have to get current articles
on particular topics, so I am able to do a little class instruction, (and
this way am able to hit the seventh and eighth graders as well as the sixth
with whom I still have regularly scheduled "library skills.") but mostly do
one-on-one while they are searching for articles.

I haven't had a Reader's Guide subscription since 1994 or '95. I'm doing
the same kind of instruction using the periodical database we subscribe to.
This is what they'll find in our public and college libraries, so I want
them to be prepared.

Interesting Question. Questions about the Reader's Guide are still on the
Iowa Test of Basic Skills. But, in Georgia, we have this wonderful resource
funded by the state which includes, three EBSCO magazine database, ProQuest
magazine database, encyclopedias, and much, much more. The Reader's Guide
is not necessary. I don't purchase it anymore. Next year before the ITBS I
will explain to the students what it is and how it works. On the ITBS
reference section, there were a total of 38 questions, five of which
pertained to the Reader's Guide.
