With all the discussion regarding copyright, I have a question regarding
loaning CD-ROMs from the library. Granted, the license agreement often
states that the program can only be "installed" on one computer, but is
installing on multiple computers really a violation of the copyright law?
Copyright forbids the duplication, but if you don't copying the program on
to the hard drive, aren't you instead violating your licensing agreement?
Is there a difference? And to take it one step further, has the law really
defined what "installed" is? With new court cases defining electronic
copyright further, I could easily see installing a kernel of a program as
falling under fair use.
