ate: Tue, 16 May 2000 08:28:31 -0400 Hi, Paige's question about Amos Fortune and Carry on Mr. Bowditch made me decide to ask about weeding older Newbery books (Mr. Bowditch is one). I have some that haven't circulated in 20 years (or more I'd bet) even when the kids are required to read a Newbery book. There's no problem with the Caldecott's, just the Newbery's. I sent a message a couple of weeks ago asking for ideas for starting a group for high school librarians, & was asked to post a hit. I'll paraphrase the answers, in no special order: -- One person wrote of her 100 person group. They have a newsletter, and have vendor sponsored events (breakfasts, etc) with librarian &/or vendor presentations. -- Another group meets monthly throughout the school year, except Dec & May, and once in the summer for lunch. Eight to ten librarians (from 2 counties) generally attend, & they meet at each others' libraries. Some topics covered: collaboration, literacy, lesson plans, best reference sources, favorite books. They have also done training sessions. -- A group of about 2 dozen meets twice a year (fall & spring, after the state conference, so they can share conference info). They "have had outside presenters, but often just sit & discuss." Topics include security issues, censorship, CD-ROM demos, networking with public libraries, & demos from sales reps. -- A last group meets 3 times a year for refreshments or lunch at different schools. They like to stay loose, & not get too structured or organized, & try to help each other keep up with what is going on . They have had author visits & vendor presentations, & they publicize workshops & professional development resources for librarians. -- Two people sent web addresses to check for resources -- http://skyways.lib.ks.us/infonet/infonet.html http://www.islma.org For most who responded, the real strength in their group, whatever its size & makeup, is the chance to network, share & learn from others in a similar position. ______ Hilary Anderson, Librarian T.C.
