Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! My work has been cut in half! --------- J. Renee Thompson Library Media Specialist Browne Academy Alexandria, VA thompson@browneacademy.org I have an independent reading/discussion elective with 7th and 8th graders and have found that The Giver by Lois Lowry is, year after year, the book most likely to spark a great discussion. Other winners are The Thief of Always by Clive Barker, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, the Weetzie Bat books by Francesca Lia Block and the fairy tale adaptations by Donna Jo Napoli, especially The Magic Circle (Hansel and Gretel), Zel (Rapunzel) and Sirena (The Odyssey). Kathleen Fernandes Librarian, Crossroads School St. Louis, Missouri kathleen@crossroads-school.org ------- I used Wringer last year very successfully. I think more good ones would be My Louisiana Sky and When Zachary Beaver Came to town but I haven't done them yet. Jan Cole ------ Midwife's apprentice by Cushman Bea Ishler, LMS Bryant High School Irvington, AL bishler@mcpss.com ------- Hi Renee, I would definitely recommend Margaret Haddix's "Among the Hidden". It is Science Fiction at it's best (and I hate Sci Fi). I also would recommend Caroline Cooney's "Burning Up" for a discussion about racism or Walter Dean Myers "Monster". Judi Judi O'Brien obrienj@ride.ri.net Library Media Specialist Davisville Middle School 200 School Street North Kingstown, RI 02852 "If information was power, librarians would rule the world". ------ I would try Ralph Fletcher's Flying Solo, about the 6th grade class whose substitute teacher fails to show up. The members of the class decide to see how long they can get away with having no adult in the classroom, so your book club members could have some interesting fantasies about class without supervision. Ultimately, the class discovers that it wasn't such a fun day. It has all the mischief you'd expect from unsupervised 6th graders, but they also deal with the very adult issues of loss and personal responsibility. --------- I've had middle school discussion groups for nine years & hit books vary with the group. Last year's eighth grade group said that Among the Hidden by Haddix was the best book we'd read. They were also in the seventh grade group the previous year. (Due to numbers, I split into 7th & 8th grade groups.) The years I have all girl groups we read a lot of Carolyn Cooney. Another hit was Please don't let me die. I bought copies several years apart & there are different authors on each group: Diane Hoh, then later, Lindsay Caldwell. Nancy Andersen, K-8 librarian OLC School, Erie, PA andersen@olcs-erie.com -------- Nothin But the Truth-------Avi On My Honor---Marion Dane Bauer Cathy Jones, LMS Mt. St. Joseph Academy Buffalo, NY caj2064@aol.com "All that mankind has done, thought, gained or been: it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books." Thomas Carlyle ------ I need this same information. In fact, I was thinking about posting a request myself. This is the second year for our book club. Last year we did Tangerine, The Terrorist, Running Out of Time, Invitation to the Game, Nothing But the Truth. This year we are doing Maniac Magee, Music of Dolphins and Holes. I need 4 more titles and I'm at a loss as to what to choose. Nan Sprester, Librarian Brewer Middle School ------ The Giver and Phoenix Rising would be great for the older students. Wringer would also be good.
