Hello all,

I am generally a lurker who answers individually to posts, but I had to =
post this question to the group. An English teacher at my high school =
is currently working on her masters and is taking a research class. I =
have occasionally helped her locate information and have thoroughly =
enjoyed it. The latest in her series of questions is beyond both my =
capabilities and the capabilities of the librarian on duty yesterday at =
her university (Steven F. Austin State Univ. in Nacogdoches, Tx). First =
I'll give you the question and then I'll tell you what she has found out =
so far:

During the 19th century, Harper and Brothers published in America such =
major British novelists as Dickens, the Brontes, Thackeray, and Hardy. =
What specific books of each author did the firm publish, and how much =
was paid to the author for each work?

She has located the list of books each author published and even found =
out what each book cost at the time of publication. But in all her =
research she cannot locate what was paid to each author. Harper and =
Brothers is obviously now HarperCollins. She has checked their website, =
done general and detailed searches on several search engines, spent =
yesterday at the library looking at various bibliographies and =
biographies of each author (which is where she found the info. she now =
has), and this morning we checked the anthologies and biographies in my =
library. She has a list of questions that she answers weekly, and this =
is just one of many, but if you have any suggestions on where to look to =
find this information she (and I) would be most grateful.

TIA,
Michelle Craven, Librarian
Crockett High School
Crockett, Texas
