Vertical files are helpful *if* there is someone on staff assigned with the task of keeping them updated, i.e., weeding yearly, adding new information, creating new files, etc. With several local history projects here, the only information we have is what one of my colleagues has collected over the years. There are no books on local buildings, people, etc. If your collection is extremely outdated, then throwing it all out and starting fresh might be the best way to go. Sincerely, Melanie C.
