Good morning LM_NETters! This month's topic is Curiosities & Wonders. Titles on the subject of curiosities and wonders attract a broad range of students, from the most avid reader to the most reluctant. These titles will circulate! But, outdated content will quickly be a negative reflection on your collection when detected by the reader. Or worse yet, it will be a professional disservice to the reader NOT detecting that something is no longer a curiosity or wonder! A new addition for this year is grade levels on the list of titles to consider for purchase. A brief explanation of Weed of the Month for new lm_netters: The SUNLINK Weed of the Month began in September, 1997, as an effort to help provide Florida's School Library Media Specialists with guidelines and suggestions for weeding their collections a little at a time as well as for adding quality materials. The project idea and specific suggestions came from media specialists around the world via LM_NET, and SUNLINK's Weed of the Month parallels a similar effort taking place throughout the country. A section of a school library media collection is identified each month during the school year (September through May) as a weeding target. For more information, including guidelines for weeding this area, suggested titles to examine, and possible titles to consider for purchase, go to http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/ .The current topic, as well as the archives of previous Weed of the Month topics for the past three years may be found at the same location by scrolling down the menu bar on the left side of the screen. Past topics include: Space & Astronomy, Native Americans, Europe, Africa, Careers, Diseases, Dinosaurs, Cookery, Biography, Folk tales, Computer Science, Fiction, Geography, Holidays, Sports, Maps & Atlases, Personal Finance, Vocational Trades, Professional Collections, Weather, Hobbies & Crafts, Music, Black History, Transportation, Drug & Alcohol Education, Cuba, and Tobacco Education. Many thanks to the lm_netters who have emailed their support for this effort, and who have contributed wonderful stories to the section called "things we've dug up while weeding!" Let's make this another year of weeding outdated, inaccurate information as well as those "moldy oldies!" -- Carol McWilliams mcwillia_c@popmail.firn.edu Assistant director, SUNLINK University of Central Florida Orlando, FL =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
