What is series of numbers at bottom of Verso page???

Can someone tell me what the series of numbers mean on the back of a title
page.

example:  LEGENDS   edited by Silverberg

at the bottom :

  First Edition: October 1998

0  9  8  7  6  5  4  3  2  1

What is the 0 to 1 count down???
