Fellow Librarians,
I am the sole librarian in a high school district which has three =
comprehensive school site library facilities. I have been configuring an =
automated system for over a year, and as part of that system I installed =
receipt printers [part of my software vendor's suggested circ desk =
configuration] this week at two of three circulation counters. One of my =
technicians asked pointed questions about how printing out records of each =
transaction for student patrons lines up with libraries' explicit =
responsibility to protect borrower privacy. Name, school ID number, =
title(s) and due date go on the receipt. =20
I had not considered this question; however, I noted that we do NOT give =
these receipts to anybody BUT the student borrowers. My tech is fearful =
that students, unaware of their privacy needs and rights, may simply =
discard the receipts in the hallways. I offered to print up a warning =
poster, but that is not a good option in this facility. I also have this =
conviction that we are in the business of training young adults to become =
fellow adults and tax payers;that they need to learn to have a care, get a =
clue and watch out! Maybe that is putting it a bit baldly for the sake of =
humor, but...you get the picture. =20
So, I would be interested to hear from anyone who thinks this is a =
serious issue [ie: litigable?]. Suggested policy statements, lines of =
reasoning and politically correct screeds I will post, if there seems to =
be an interest. =20
Regards,

Ray Van Diest
District Librarian
Shasta Union High School Library
Redding, CA
