Dear Folks, I plan to have a year-long display about Celebrating Diversity in my library. I'm working with the 3/4 combination teacher on a special project called "Beyond Difference" through the Vermont Center for the Book. The Center gave us a selection of books dealing with diversity issues, some in multiple copy sets. We are going to create Standards-Based Units surrounding the theme, during the school year. I decided to make Diversity my theme for the year, rather than just doing Black History or Women's History in "their months", as I have been doing for two years. (I have used quotes a lot from famous people, displaying images of the person with a cartoonish-word bubble coming from their mouth, such as: astronaut Sally Ride, with her famous quote: "The thing that I'll remember most about the flight is that it was fun. In fact, I'm sure it was the most fun I'll ever have in my life.") For my new theme, I think I will hang a huge rainbow across the library with signs saying Celebrate Diversity Here, or It's great to be different, etc., and have lots of great books about and by diverse people. I also want kids to interact and have book discussions about diversity issues. If anyone has ideas about good ways to highlight diversity, I would love to hear them, too. By the way, Vermont is the "whitest" state in the nation: 99% white, so we really need to understand about different people and cultures here.
