Thanks for the great suggestions on a theme for moving back "home" to our newly renovated middle school. Since I live in Kansas, I'll be using the "There's No Place Like Home" idea. It is especially fitting, since last year our little town survived a tornado! How about........"There's No Place Like Home"? Home Is Where The Heart Is....Welcome Back! Connections: Honoring our past, anticipating our future. We live and learn at Parsons How about a display of suitcases and framed pictures of the "old family" plus new pictures of the "new family" and a "Welcome Home" sign. How about "Homeward Bound" You might try metamorphosis as a theme. You surely have lots new coming out of old.... I had a similar experience two years ago when we moved the school library to a "new home." I used the theme of "Grand Openings" and displayed several famous first lines from titles that should be familiar to at least some of students and/or visitors. Hence, both books and libraries have "grand openings"! I used everything from picture books to Dickens. Here's some from a lady who's moved 18 times and lived in 7 states... I've unpacked lots of fun ideas for all of those boxes! Read - "Alexander, Who (And I mean it) never going to Move " Middle schooler's will love it too. Go to the local paint store and ask them to donate some "mistake paints" - tint them primary colors... when you are done unpacking - go outside with a few trusted parents and paint all of those moving boxes bright colors.. let them dry.. cover each box with book covers or book ads that students can make for you... Then place them on top of shelves - make a fun cube area for displays - etc... They will be a fun reminder of how many boxes you went through! If you are moving from one building to another and do not want to "pack" if the space is close enough - make a Moving chain... every student hands books over in order to the other library... It goes faster than you think... More box ideas... collapse them flat and open them at the seams... have students cut out letters - upper case and lower case... Numbers - and lots of them... they are fun to decorate with. Cover with colored paper or have the student paint them with designs that match the Dewey no.'s - Many times in a move you have "weeded" and the shelves look a little lonely - Have a contest for the best "shelve art from a moving box" - display them in the library... you'll be amazed at the themes for book-box-art you will get ! Not to mention - if you have a grassy hill around flattened boxes are so much fun to ride down a grass covered hill ... Have fun! -- Robie Martin Media Specialist • Parsons Middle School U.S.D. 503, Parsons District Schools 2719 Main • Parsons, KS 67357 316-421-4190 • fax 316-423-8822 robiem@vikingnet.net "No one should be deprived of the pleasure and quality of life that beautifully prepared food and a little wine can bring." --Julia Child =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
