FYI: got this from PW Daily today 7/2/01 ----------------------------------------------------------- We Kid You Not: Upcoming Oprah Discusses Children's Books There's no denying the popularity and reach of Oprah's Book Club, which routinely turns any Oprah-selected title into an instant bestseller. The Book Club garners so much feedback throughout the year that Winfrey has now dedicated an entire show to responding to Club fans and critics (the first such program was broadcast last July). In the "Letters to Oprah's Book Club" show, which airs this coming Friday, July 6, Winfrey will tackle one of her most frequently asked queries: "Why don't you do something with children's books?" As she has in the past, Winfrey stresses that she does not recommend children's books because she does not feel qualified to do so. So for the segments devoted to kids' titles Winfrey explains that she relied on a team of experts comprised of moms from her Harpo Productions Company staff, Book Sense and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio (independent consumer review of children's media), to make book selections that may be helpful to parents and caregivers. She emphasizes that the books are not Oprah's Book Club titles. However, Winfrey does share memories of two of her personal childhood favorites: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (HarperCollins) and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (Perennial). Featured books from the show include, Babies up to 2: Hug by Jez Alborough (Candlewick) Max's Bedtime by Rosemary Wells (Dial) Shanna's Princess Show by Jean Marzollo, illus. by Shane Evans (Hyperion/Jump at the Sun) Counting Kisses by Karen Katz (S&S/McElderry) When Mama Comes Home Tonight by Eileen Spinelli, illus. by Jane Dyer (S&S) 2-up: The Adventures of Max the Minnow by William Boniface, illus. by Don Sullivan (Accord) Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberley (Little, Brown) No, David! by David Shannon (Scholastic/Blue Sky) Little White Duck by Walt Whippo, illus. by Joan Paley (Little, Brown) 3-5: What Mommies/Daddies Do Best by Laura Numeroff, illus. by Lynn Munsinger (S&S) Chewy Louie by Howie Schneider (Rising Moon) Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier, illus. by Lori Lohstoeter (S&S/Schwartz) I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child (Candlewick) Doctor De Soto by William Steig (FSG) 6-9: Dodo Gets Married by Petra Mathers (S&S/Schwartz) The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson (Putnam) The Coin Counting Book by Rozanne Lanczak Williams (Charlesbridge) Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles (S&S/Schwartz) Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster by Debra Frasier (Harcourt) 9-up: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo (Candlewick) A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (FSG/Dell paperback) The Giver by Lois Lowry (Houghton Mifflin/Dell paperback) Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor (S&S/Aladdin) Holes by Louis Sachar (FSG/Dell paperback) Kit's Wilderness by David Almond (Delacorte) --Shannon Maughan Sybil Finemel Media Coordinator Los Angeles CA LII Indexer, http://lii.org/ KidsConnect Volunteer Virtual Reference Desk Volunteer sfinemel@mediaone.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
