I was looking through a school architecture magazine today ( Not my
normal reading but someone brought it to me because our school and the
media center were in it.) With all the talk of not having room for
libraries and not having room for libraries, I was amazed at the pictures
of new schools which showed huge high ceiling (useless space and lots of
air to heat) hallways and enormous rotundas (sp) There were entrance
areas that looked to be the size of footballs fields with no apparent
purpose unless you wanted to have the entire student body gather in that
area. I wonder how schools can justify spending money like that instead
of being certain that each sq ft of floor space is designed for optimal
student instruction instead of just looking pretty. Maybe that would be
enough money to add on to the library! Incidentally we have some of
those hallways too but the rest of the building is ulitiarian but
pleasant. Just my observation.
