Dear All, I have been following this thread with interest. I am the product of a phonics based reading program. Seventy kids in a parochial school First grade class in 1953 and we all learned to read using phonics. I have also seen my own children progress through the public education system learning to read with other reading programs. My oldest taught herself to read by watching Sesame Street faithfully twice a day. So I accept the fact that reading is not a "one method fits all" skill. In my state of NJ there is a bill in the Assembly education committee that would effectively make phonics the "official" reading method of our state and even mandate a state-wide phonics test for lower grade students. It is A3360 and it establishes a procedure for the diagnosis of reading ability of kindergarten, first and second grade pupils. Needless to say our local state teachers association, the NJEA, opposes it. Jo *********************************************************** Josephine G.
