Guess I can beat you all. My father taught me to read when I was 5 with a McGuffy's reader. When I went to 1st grade and had Dick and Jane, I loved the pictures but breezed through the book. Since having a grand daughter who is LD - aural discrimination problem, I have learned that some children can not learn phonics and have to use whole word. As someone astutely said there is no "one size fits all". I also feel that "Hooked on Phonics" and others like it are using parental guilt to make money.
