I had originally asked for suggestions for DVDs for curriculum use. I didn't get a lot of replies. I think this is an area where we will be seeing new products all the time. libraryvideo.com has a good explanation of the advantages of DVDs. http://www.libraryvideo.com/dvd_irp.asp?mscssid=1LWPDNBXHVU08G2Q923JF7WWR6US 8GDB (If this address wraps, copy it and paste it into your browser.) One useful bit of information! DVDs are produced for six different regions of the world. This is to prevent people from purchasing a movie that has been released in a different part of the world and not yet in their country and seeing it ahead of time. The DVD player that you purchase in your country will play only DVDs from your region. These are the six regions: 1. US, US Territories and Canada. 2. Japan, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East including Egypt 3. Southeast Asia, East Asia including Hong Kong 4. Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, South America and the Caribbean 5. Russia and Eastern Europe, Indian sub-continent, Africa, North Korea and Mongolia 6. China Pioneer makes DVD players. They have a list of educational DVDs at http://www.tools4teachers.com I searched for the home pages of some of the companies listed at Pioneer. DVDs produced for curriculum use seem to be quite expensive, probably because the market is more limited. SVE & Churchill Media http://www.svemedia.com 21 DVDs listed, 19 - 28 minutes long, $94.95 many different subjects I found this site interesting. http://www.standarddeviants.com/1-800-238-9669/cerebellum.home http://www.cerebellum.com (Either one takes you to the same site.) Here is information from their website: "Cerebellum Corporation, the nation's leading producer of educational videos and DVDs for high school and college students, has taken the educational media category by storm and has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1993. At Cerebellum, our mission is to combine solid educational content with cutting-edge technology and top-notch writing. Recommended by more than 500 teachers and college professors, the Standard Deviants cover the most difficult high school and college courses. Each Standard Deviants title is written by an academic team comprised of professors from leading universities (Yale, University of Virginia, George Washington University and Georgetown University for example). These award-winning videos and DVDs cut through the confusion with a clear and concise format, high-tech computer graphics, and a fun approach to serious education. The result is a product unlike any you've ever seen. Sometimes described as a cross between "Sesame Street" and "Saturday Night Live," our products teach the most difficult concepts with an added twist of humor." They had around 40 DVDs listed. I looked at the info about the Algebra Intro 2-pack DVD. It was $35.99. AGC/United is another company that produces DVDs. http://www.agcunited.com/ History, English, Science, grades 5 and up starting at $95 47 products Ztek http://www.ztek.com/ A couple of physics DVDs Draw and color with Uncle Fred http://www.unclefred.com/bottombuttons/productinfo/dvd/dvdpage.html One DVD - Funny Doodles: 17 Cartoonys and 6 songs $12 plus shipping BTW http://www.unclefred.com/ is a fun site that teaches children to draw cartoons. Ohana Foundation has some interesting DVDs. They are unique and use a special Web DVD player. It also connects to the internet. Each DVD has web links that you can switch to. The players retail for $300. The DVDs that I looked at were short (10 to 20 minutes) and relatively expensive, I thought ($120). However, if you buy 10 DVDs you get a Web DVD player free. "Each Web DVD title is fully integrated with lesson plans, projects, worksheets and correlations to national standards on the Web, which means they're always available and always up to date." http://www.ohanalearning.com libraryvideo.com was recommended by several people. I liked it because you can search for a specific media, such as DVDs. http://www.libraryvideo.com There were 404 DVDs listed for Pre-K to adults, prices began at $14.95. Most appeared to be full-length movies, not especially curriculum based. You can also purchase DVDs at http://www.half.com These are pre-owned but the descriptions of some say they are unopened. It is helpful if you already know the title when you search. You can search for DVDs at Teacher's Video Company http://www.teachersvideo.com/ Once again, they appear to be mostly full-length movies. I hope this helps those of you who are looking to purchase DVDs for your schools. Thanks to all of you who sent me suggestions.
