In a message dated 10/2/01 3:44:21 PM, LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU writes: Hi Folks-- I wanted to join in on the Lemony Snicket bandwagon. I've read about half of the series and found them hilarious. One of my reasons for recommending them to teachers is the vocabulary aspect. I cracked up when I read one review that said (I paraphrase), "It's annoying the way the author is always defining words in context!" The way he goes off on a tear to define words is priceless, and can be used to get kids writing their own Snicket-style definitions to share with the rest of the class. I reviewed The Austere Academy in my Book Talk column for Instructor in Sept. '00 as a terrific read aloud. With the emotions of the country running so grim and glum, especially on the East Coast, it may be tough for a while to get in the mood for his over-the-top style of arch, disastrous plot events, though. I just finished listening to Jim Dale's astonishing 12-cassette recording of Harry Potter 4, and it felt so wonderful to be out there fighting against Voldemort. (Uh, I mean, he who must not be named. Sorry.)
