My husband and I are safe yet shaken. As you know I work in a College of =
Education that contains a lab school pre-k through 8th grade. The phones =
were not working consistantly and many of our collegues and children had =
relatives and loved ones working in the WTC. Because of the ages of our =
children we did not have television and radio on around the kids. we =
carried on like it was an ordinary day. I just taught my classes as I had =
planned. If children brought up the situation we just said yes I have =
heard , we are hoping for the best. Paul works on 26th and fifth and =
walked all the way home to Brooklyn. Our last kid was picked up at 4:00 =
and we closed the library at five. The alphabet trains were running so I =
took the subway home. A 45 minute trip took an hour and a half with a few =
scary stops in tunnels. ( Just waiting for traffic to clear) Emerging from =
the subway was surreal. Brooklyn Heights is right across the east river =
from the twin towers. The air was thick with debri and smoke. The streets =
were crowded with security vehicles and the police. As this tragedy =
touches everyone of us Paul and I are grief stricken by the reported loss =
of the fire company from across the street from our house. These guys were =
reported to be first on the scene. ( a five minute drive over the bridge =
to down town) I didn't fall apart until arrived at our door step and Alan =
, our upstairs neighbor came in the door behind me (he works at WTC but he =
was in court yesterday) Our school is closed today. Keep in touch. Lisa

I have been reading the postings on the tragedy. Somehow they are
comforting.

We heard the news at the end of our school day. I was just closing my
library to go home. We didn't believe the first person who came in to =
tel=3D
l
us.

All of our schools (Department of Defense Dependents Schools) are closed
for at least today. We have been asked not to go in at all. All of the
bases are on the highest level of alert. Can only think of the many
schools in DC and New York who must be closed as well. I hope that =
parent=3D
s
can be with their children today.

The Germans that I have talked to since yesterday are as shocked as we =
al=3D
l
are.
