At the suggestion of Sharon Bergman, I e-mailed Philip Pullman and asked him of the meaning for the name, Aesahaettr, given the knife. Here is his response: "Hello. The word is Aesahaettr (the vowels should be joined in a ligature, but I can't find the right symbol on my keyboard. I invented the word by looking in the glossary at the back of my edition of the old Norse Edda, which of course I had to do 'backwards', because it was Norse-English and not English-Norse, for words meaning (roughly) god and killer. I hope that's a help! Philip Pullman" [His response was much more prompt than my posting of it was!] Shelley McCoy Library Media Specialist Farragut Middle School 200 West End Avenue Knoxville, TN 37922 phone 865-671-7016 fax 865-671-7048 email: mccoys@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
