Oh, you ARE providing good service from the sound of it. And lets face it...if the teachers don't give you any prior notice, what can you be but reactive. To my mind you need a mix....a blend of being proactive and reactive. People who are proactive ALL the time are often perceived as being pushy. Anticipate some needs, be ready to go to a few teachers who you have worked well with in the past with some suggestions for a project, a visit, or a display. Since you seem to be under the gun here, I would document these efforts. I would also express (in the nicest possible way, of course! <G>) to your principal that you are striving for a mix of pro- and re-active responses. A librarian who cannot react to last minute requests (we ALL get them, and we all are guilty of procrastination SOMEtimes!) is a poor librarian, IMHO. I go out and hustle business, often by attending department meetings with a bagful of new materials that I know tie in with units the classes are starting or will be doing in the near future. When socializing in the halls or by the copier, I will sometimes sneak a look at what is being run off and make a suggestion or two of ways the library could support that lesson/unit. I'll also ask for time in a faculty meeting to mention new material and remind staff of ways the library can help them. That is less personal, but you will be letting all the staff know you are there and eager to help. But some people I just don't push, knowing from experience that they do not react well to being buttonholed. But when they DO come in, I do my very best for them. >=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= >All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law. >To quit LM_NET (or set-reset NOMAIL or DIGEST, etc.) send email to: >listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: >1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST >4) SET LM_NET MAIL * Please allow for confirmation from Listserv. >For LM_NET Help see: http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/ >Archives: http://askeric.org/Virtual/Listserv_Archives/LM_NET.shtml > See also EL-Announce for announcements from library media vendors: > http://www.mindspring.com/~el-announce/ >=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-= Mark Williams Librarian Colton High School 777 W.
